Blend & Trend: Popular wine blends by Midalidare
Synergy is the goal of blended wines, though many consumers focus on single grapes. Indeed, an understanding of how an individual grape tastes can build a foundation of knowledge. However, many of the world’s greatest wines are based on blends.
Wines from Bordeaux, Southern Rhone, Champagne, Chianti, and the Douro Valley are benchmarks for the art of grape blends. However, since blended wines had become a lot more interesting in recent times, the tradition meet innovation and classic Old World interweaves with the trendy New World. Countries of the Old World, like France, Italy and Spain have long mastered the art of wine blending. This is because of the amazing diversity of unique wine grapes found in Europe. Of course, many New World producers also blend different grapes — even famously rethinking “European” grapes. Think of Argentinian blends using Malbec, Chilean reappropriation of Carmenere, or Napa Valley’s super Bordeaux-style reds.
There are some exciting new styles being developed as well as new takes on more traditional wine blends. A single winery might create different wine blend depending on its the terroir, potential and resources. Let us have a closer look at Midalidare’s trendy blending styles.
Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon Blend
When it comes to these two varieties, more popular blend is Cabernet based wine with addition of Syrah. But Syrah is starring at Midalidare, so our blend is based on thi
s variety. 42/25 Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon is terroir wine expressing the unique natural gifts of Mogilovo village are refracted by tradition and innovation. 75% of Syrah grapes with its fleshy fruit mid-palate are strengthen with 15% of Cabernet Sauvignon, adding rich flavor, tannin, and concentration.
Merlot based blends
Off course, Merlot is most popular blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Caber
net Franc (Bordeaux). A common blend is also Merlot-Malbec (Chile, Australia) or Merlot-Syrah (California)
. At Midalidare we created a unique triple Merlot based blend
inspired by three red varieties that stand out in their development. A blend of Merlot, Malbec and Syrah, in different percentage for each vintage, Nota Bene "pays special attention" to the best of Mogilovo, banded together in a bottle of red wine.
Adding Cabernet Sauvignon to Nota Bene’s blend gave birth to Carpe Diem Red: our wine for friends, for fun, for everyday moments in life. Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah & Malbec is young and expressive food friendly blend, suitable for every taste and every moment.
Chardonnay blend
We have great terroir for white varieties at Mogilovo. When it comes to Chardonnay blends, one of the most popular is with Viognier. Adding oak fermented Sauvignon Blanc to this couple aimed to express the unique terroir of Shipkata vineyard. 42/25 Chardonnay & Viognier & Sauvignon Blanc is a part of our “Location” brand: young, vibrant wines for emotional exploration of Mogilovo taste and Midalidare spirit.
Sauvignon Blanc based blends
The most common blending partner for Sauvignon blanc is Semillon. This blend is
most closely associated with the traditional white wines of Bordeaux in France (called Bordeaux Blanc). We added Chardonnay to this classic white blend, creating our Carpe Diem White: fresh, citrusy and rich-flavoured everyday wine.
The blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris is a combination of two typical Old World white varieties successfully adapted to the New World of winemaking. Our brand Synergy emphasizes the wonderful interaction between Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris at Midalidare. “Synergy” is a blend where two aromatic white varieties complement each other and create the perfect synergy.
