When the passion for wine meets innovation
Midalidare is a young winery, but its history is full of innovation and unexpected surprises for Bulgarian and international wine lovers. The first vintage was presented on the market in 2010 and from then on, we intertwined the traditional winemaking with state-of-art methods and viticultural practices; created intriguing wine blends and atypical for Bulgaria varieties founded a home in the village of Mogilovo.
Midalidare achieves international recognition at the highest level in the traditional sparkling winemaking (CSWWC), and from 2023 we are producing wine in New Zealand under the Midalidare New Zealand brand. Starring for Midalidare are also a Rosé wine from the Mourvedre, Midalidare Viognier - a blend of several barrels fermented with different types of yeast, Multi-vintage – a red wine with aged, bottled wine added to the current vintage, Midalidare Carbonic Maceration Petit Verdot - a red wine made under "carbonated maceration" technique.
Several international black grape varieties have long found their place in Mogilovo and showed exceptional development: Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot. Now the mighty company is joined by a little-known giant in Bulgaria. Although a native of the Madiran region of France, Tanat is better known in his second homeland of Uruguay. In recent years, it has also gained popularity in the USA, South Africa and Argentina. In Mogilovo, it is developing beautifully, and we hope that soon wine connoisseurs in Bulgaria will give this interesting variety its due.
Why Tannat?
Of course, an important reason is that the terroir requirements of Tanat are close to those of Malbec, and the development of Malbec in Mogilovo is more that excellent. Another reason is that, although French, the variety is familiar to our team while they were working in South America. And last but not least, this is a rare, interesting variety, little known internationally and especially in Bulgaria. And exploring the unknown and atypical is always a challenge for the Midalidare team.
What makes Tannat so special?
Tannat is a fertile variety for winemaking. In suitable terroir, it gives excellent results both varietal and blended. Tanat wines are dense, tannic, with very intense color and aromas, have good aging potential and develop excellently in bottle. The variety blends very well with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot. But its most distinctive feature is its extremely high antioxidant content – one of the highest levels among red wines.
Presenting Midalidare's first vintage of Tannat: Midalidare Barrel Fermented Tannat 2022. By the end of the month, the first blend of Tannat with Merlot is also expected. We are impatient and we are looking forward to receiving feedback from wine lovers, sure that this charming black grape variety will find its admirers in Bulgaria as well.
