In quest for perfection
Tradition and innovation, know-how and state of art practices, modern expression of time-honored winemaking – this is Midalidare right from the beginning.
Every year we enrich our portfolio with a new wine, but 2024 is the year of surprises. After presenting our new sparkling wine and CSWWC 2024 gold medalist Midalidare Blanc de Noirs NV and the first vintage of Midalidare Barrel Fermented Tannat, it is time to pay attention to a well-established black variety in Mogilovo but grown in a new way - Syrah. We selected the best blocks from the Shipkata vineyard and in 2023 we applied the Cane Cut technique for the first time.
The term “Cane Cut” (or “Cordon Cut’ and “Cut Cane”) originated in Australia but the method dates as far back as the days of the Roman Empire and ancient Greece. The name ‘straw wines’ is because of the technique of drying out grapes on straw mats under the hot Mediterranean sun. In France, the process of producing straw wines is today known as passerillage. In Italy the name for straw wine is passito, while in Spain it’s called vino de pasas. Modern New World updated the technique, but the aim remains the same – producing wine from the sun-dried grapes.
The Cane Cut is more often used for production of sweet wines from white varieties. But applied to some black ones, especially Syrah, it increases aging potential due to the concentration of polyphenols. Cane Cut is familiar to our winemakers from their work in Australia, and now the time has come for their knowledge to be applied in Mogilovo as well.
Syrah is one of the best performing varieties in Mogilovo. Seeking the best that the variety and the terroir can offer, we used the Cane Cut technique and created Midalidare Cane Cut Syrah. The result is a powerful wine with very good structure, excellent aging potential and an intense aroma of sun-dried raisins, vanilla, and black pepper.
Midalidare Cane Cut Syrah 2023 is now ready to be enjoyed and will definitely benefit from further ageing. We are fascinated by this incarnation of our Syrah. This year (2024) we applied the Cane Cut technique for the second time and we are looking forward to even better results.
