Noble White grapes of Midalidare
Exceptional qualities and unique characteristics of classic white varieties on the terroir of Mogilovo...
The best grapes of each vintage grown on the best organic certified vineyard. The most suitable varieties for the terroir of Dabovets vineyard. This is the Grand Vintage brand. It consists of three exceptional varietal red wines and each of them reveals the nature of Mogilovo village and the passion of Midalidare: Syrah, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc.
Grand Vintage is part of the original Midalidare portfolio, still on the market today. The first vintage of all three wines was 2009 and with their presentation the following year they impressed with both exceptional quality and characteristic style and finesse.
The three varieties were planted not only because they are suitable for the terroir of the Dabovets vineyard, but also because they are among the favorites of our team of winemakers – each of them has a preference for a certain variety and experience in working with it both in Bulgaria and abroad. The decision for the name of the series and the design of the labels does not come spontaneously – with each subsequent harvest the vines adapt better and better and show excellent potential and specific characteristics. Their pure varietal expression, the fact that they are planted on the same vineyard, and hence the possibility of creating Single Vineyard wines, as well as the ever-improving indicators lead to the name – magnificent, excellent, Grand vintage.
In 2010, after success and high ratings of the audience, the concept was refined and has been preserved until now. Each of the varieties is blended into the production of other Midalidare wines, but the best quality grapes are reserved only for the creation of the Grand Vintage wines.
The final touches to the brand were applied in 2018, when the Dabovets vineyard was officially certified to produce organic grapes. Since then, the latest changes in the wine labels have been made in the direction of minimalism and maximum refinement of both the vision and the concept.
Grand Vintage Syrah is the most awarded and highest rated wine in the entire Midalidare portfolio at the moment. With its 14 gold and 8 silver medals, won within 9 years of international and national competitions, it is a recognized flagman in Mogilovo.
The Syrah plantings are from two branches, unique to the Thracian Lowland region. They are of French origin and compared to other cataloged branches, they are quite different in terms of the characteristic shape of the bunch and productivity. The presented branches are the result of the so-called “mass selection”, that is, made by an expert viticulturist who is able to recognize vines with improved characteristics.
The Syrah branches, in combination with the climatic and soil conditions of Dabovets, the good expertise of our winegrowers in cultivation and our winemakers in production are the reason not only for the success of Grand Vintage Syrah, but also for the assessments of wine lovers and connoisseurs in Bulgaria.
The wine is dense, yet elegant and well-balanced, with the typical for the variety intense fruit aromas, hints of chocolate, spices and fine smoky oak. A distinctive feature is a tangible freshness on the finish, which leaves a pleasant, soft feeling in the mouth. Try Grand Vintage Syrah with barbecued pork or beef, hard cheeses, blue cheeses and mushroom dishes.
Grand Vintage Malbec is the second most famous wine from the brand. Although with a modest 4 gold and 3 silver medals, the wine won the titles of Wine #1 of Bulgaria in 2012 and #2 in 2020 from the most prestigious Bulgarian publication DiVino Top 50. In addition, our Malbec has been awarded 3 times with a bronze medal and once with a Commended.
The variety has its loyal fans in Bulgaria. Malbec wines, grown in a sunny climate and cold nights, such as the conditions in Mogilovo, are known for their richness in aroma, intense color, dense body and velvety tannins. Again, as with all Midalidare wines, a distinctive feature is the high acidity content, which gives freshness and elegance in the mouth.
The Malbec branches planted in Mogilovo are of French origin, and give aromas of black fruits, spices and ham with a pleasant tartness in both aroma and taste. Pair it with tender red meats, roast pork, turkey, lamb, blue cheeses, mozzarella, mushroom dishes, baked potatoes and vegetables.
Cabernet Franc – an exceptional red noble giant, still fighting for its place on the Bulgarian market. Perhaps because of its specific aromas and relatively light body for a red wine, as well as its high acidity, the variety is one of the underrated when produced as a varietal wine. Things are not the same when it is in a blend – then it is desired and sought after because of the wonderful spicy notes, freshness and characteristic softness it brings.
In Midalidare, Cabernet Franc is highly regarded not only as a favorite of one of our winemakers, but also as a variety that is difficult to grow in the conditions of Mogilovo, but it is generously rewarded for the care taken. Especially for the clayey red soils of Dabovets and their natural drainage, our vines are with selected rootstocks that develop a deep root system and manage to reach the groundwater in the lower layers. Of course, its qualities in a blend also make it an important part of our vineyard.
On Dabovets, Cabernet Franc is planted in the eastern part of the vineyard. The climate is suitable and the variety reveals its typical aromas of green bell pepper, black berries and violet. The naturally high acidity is enhanced by the terroir features of Mogilovo, resulting in our Grand Vintage Cabernet Franc being soft and harmonious, with an elegant body and juicy tannins. Partial fermentation in French oak adds subtle notes of smoke, natural chocolate and vanilla. The intriguing profile of the wine makes it a suitable companion for a variety of foods with a more acidic taste, as well as for legumes and vegetables.
Try it with roast pork, beef burgers or stew, meatballs in tomato sauce, chicken curry with tomatoes, turkey with cranberries, game meat, lamb gyros, goat cheese, camembert and feta cheeses, black lentils, green beans, red pepper, mushroom dishes, tomatoes, eggplant, leeks and spinach.
Dabovets is located in the area of the same name and is 15.4 hectares in size. The soils are characterized by a high content of clay with specific red colour. In pedology some soils are defined as red earth, with an accentuated presence of clayey fraction. Red colour indicates variety of iron oxides. The iron oxides differ in colour and may change the shade of the soil according to their conditions. It is therefore possible to determine the degree of soil drainage with a certain approximation. Compared to typical clayey soils, red soils have excellent drainage characteristics. The color of Dabovets vineyard is red-brown and is particularly suitable for the production of wine.
Situated northeasterly over the smaller eastern winery, the vineyard illuminates the view with its specific red clayey soils. The terrain is hilly with 10% slope. The average altitude is 360-400 metres above sea level. The temperature amplitudes are great, but the altitude prevents vines from spring frosts. Being the highest vineyard at Midalidare, Dabovets benefits from more than 2800 hours of sunshine per year and more than 100 clear days per year. After a long period and application of compulsory requirements and practices, in 2018 the vineyard was officially certified for the production of organic grapes.
